The Lewis Model of Cross-Cultural Communication was developed by Richard D. Lewis. The core of the model classifies cultural norms into linear active, multi active and re active, or some combination.
The Netherlands is considered to be a linear active country. This means that we tend to be task-orientated, highly organized planners who complete action-chains by doing one thing at a time, with a linear agenda. They prefer direct discussion, based on reliable, written sources. We are truthful, do not fear confrontation and are results oriented.
Finland is considered to be a combination of the linear active and reactive part. This means that Finns are also task-orientated, focused on planning and they also like facts.
In most of the discussions, Finns won’t take the lead and they prefer listening to talking. They are also good in compromising.
Dutch people will often take the lead in discussion and will make very clear what their point is.
