First word

Let’s say this at first: Finnish is a really difficult language. It isn’t similar to any other language, so it’s really hard or even impossible to recognize words. Try to do groceries when you don’t know a single Finnish word. Believe me, it’s hard.

One of the courses I’m following is a Finnish course. Here I learn the basics of the Finnish language. In this blog I’ll tell you what the first words were that I learned in the course. First of all: Moi! This means ‘Hi’. The first weeks I didn’t practice this in, for example a store, because everybody will start talking Finnish when you say ‘moi’. And that was the only word I knew. I also look like a real Fin: blond with blue eyes, so I didn’t dare to take the challenge. When I was here longer, I started using the word. Every time I came at the desk in a supermarket I said ‘moi’ and they told me the price of my groceries in Finnish. Then I said: ‘Pay by card, please’ and then they immediately knew that I’m not a Fin and my braveness didn’t deliver anything.
